Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King [2008]

date: 22 6 2008

You wanna now what does the lack of money do with a band? The thing that happened with Cryptopsy is the perfect answer for that. Being a pretty known death metal band, I was expecting I would find the specific elements on the new album "The Unspoken King". I heard that Lord Worm had left (again), so I was curious about the new vocal, Matt McGathy. I wish I wasn't. From brutal death metal they now sing deathcore (I've noticed that nowadays bands like this are very popular). This rotation of almost 180 degrees looks worse than what Metallica did with their "St. Anger" album.

And as if wasn't enough, they brought also a female keyboardist, Maggie Duran to be sure they will have success at 15-16 years old kids that all the day they watch TV. Sex sells!

Maybe you ask yourselves if there are any good elements in this album. There are. But only a few that sound quite well. Unfortunately Matt's voice has the "gift" to ruin them. His clean vocals are some of the worst I've ever heard.

There is only one track that has some sort of connection with the old Cryptopsy and this is the first track, "Worship Your Demons". The rest are from another story. "Bemoan the martyr" is by far the worst track with a sucky voice, the elements do not have a sense, an extremely mainstream track. But I think it will have some sort of success within the teens that never listened Cryptopsy.Another listenable track is "Anoint the Dead". The instrumentals are ok and the guitars are very good.

I don't think there's any point in talking about this album anymore. The good parts have been said already. I hope that Cryptopsy will stop playing like that. The drummer's response to the annoyed fans was that they were not open-minded enough and that this album is more experimental. Hope that they learnt from this mistake and that the next one won't have any connection with this one.

5/10
